Technology Bonanza Blooms in Bellingham

Bellingham, WA (PRWEB) April 13, 2006

The seventh annual Linuxfest Northwest takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on April 29, 2006 at Bellingham Technical College in Bellingham, WA. The free event is presented by volunteers from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia, and draws attendees from throughout the region. It features internationally recognized speakers from leading companies and well-known open source projects, as well as exhibits and demonstrations for a wide range of interests and technical abilities.

Linuxfest Northwest provides a broad spectrum of educational and networking opportunities for techies, business users, educators and novices who are just starting to explore the advantages of free and open source software. The Fest is a fun, informative, low-key way for people to explore Linux and other open source products. There is no charge to attend. All ages are welcome.

Previous Fests have included presentations by leading open source experts such as Jon “maddog” Hall, Rasmus Lerdorf, and Brian Aker of MySQL and Slashdot. According to Fest pioneer Mark Ashworth, “The 2006 LinuxFest is one of the best ever. Ideas for K12 education. A talk on digital freedom from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The latest in Linux for business from Novell, Sun, IBM, MySQL, Oracle and others. Dee-Ann LeBlanc makes Linux simple for the average person. Practical solutions for non-profits and small businesses with limited IT budgets. Medical applications. Music, games, digital camera software. Most people would be fascinated by George Dyson’s history of technology. There’s something for everyone.” This year’s presenters and exhibitors.

This year’s LinuxFest includes several programs for students, parents and educators to help develop knowledge in technical subjects. Long-time Linux supporter Adrian Klaver said, “We want to encourage kids’ interest in developing skills in science, engineering, mathematics and especially the low cost benefits of open source computer technology.”

As always, Linuxfest Northwest will close with its world famous raffle of valuable computer products, books, and novelties. “The raffle this year is going to be great,” said Bill Wright, a festival organizer. “There are t-shirts, books, and software galore. Proceeds from the raffle help to pay the Fest’s expenses. One year, a raffle prize was used to start a local business.”

After LinuxFest, the party continues with April Brews Day, a benefit for the Max Higbee Foundation, which provides community-based recreation programs for adults with developmental disabilities. LinuxFest Northwest is proud to be a sponsor; several LinuxFest exhibitors will be giving away tickets.

Open source is a collaborative approach for developing high-quality software. Open source software solutions are available for most computing needs at little or no cost. Open Source Customization ? Tailoring your website to choice

Open Source Customization ? Tailoring your website to choice

How will you accomplish the preferred functionality and look for your website? For a layman, this will be a dilemma that appears unassailable until he/she comes across open source customization.

Open source customization involves tailoring open source content management system (CMS) or scripts like Joomla, WordPress, Oscommerce, Mambo and PHPBB to adorn the website with the choicest look and functionality. However, a layman can still not sail through open source customization until he/she has a good knowledge of PHP, CSS, and HTML.

Open source Content Management Systems like WordPress and Joomla are of great use in modern techno-freak world. WordPress forms the most popular blogging platform, with many a people hosting their weblogs on this platform. With respect to the other blog platforms, it is relatively easier to publish and organize content on WordPress. Want to upload your favourite photos and videos for others to see. WordPress allows these and more. Many a users are now using this free-to-use platform to build websites. Besides WordPress blogs and websites are more user-friendly and SEO friendly, thanks to the host of in-built functionalities.

Joomla is relatively tougher, but this award winning open source software allows you to build a seamless website without even messing with HTML, CSS or PHP. Another important advantage of using Joomla is that the website developer has a greater command on the look and feel of the website. Also one can try a whole spectrum of ways to view different parts of the website. Like plug-ins in WordPress, Joomla offers a host of components that can be downloaded for free and for a small charge on the internet.

The obvious question then is what the need for customization is if these open source web based softwares are so sound and seamless. The answer is in the large number of benefits that can be had through open source customization. Want to have a contact form or an image slideshow on the website? Open source customization is the answer. Open source customization also offers browser compatibility so that the website looks consistent in whatever browser it is viewed. What’s more the website shows content uninterrupted in all screen sizes.

That essays the role of customization in open source softwares. Now the website built on Joomla or WordPress is ready to be customized. There are two important parts which need to be considered while customization-Design part and Functionality part. The former defines how your website will look to the users. A large number of CMS have different files for design and programming. It is the style sheet in the theme folder where the design changes are to be made. In Joomla, look out for the template files that feature the content in the screen with preferred font colors, heading, list style and so on.

This predicament is tackled by using a master adaptation of the file and the person can access the document at once and if the point of revision is done, a different document will be saved as the modified file while the master version remains unaffected.</p>

<p>Open source document management system also features image management, web content management, records management, document management, content platform depository and content management interoperability service.</p.

When You Think About Business Software, Think Open Source

When You Think About Business Software, Think Open Source

Is Business Software really out of reach for a Small Business?

Not anymore. What is it that a business needs, if it’s made of let’s say 3-5 people with one office (plus 3-5 home offices), some assets and a big desire to succeed?

Webmail
A synchronized calendar
A Website
Some sort of CRM system
A sales automation tool would be cool
A project management software (although they don’t know it yet)
Somewhere to store documents – like a Document Manager
And ultimately – an ERP programme

These could total an investment that ranges into millions of dollars/euros. That is obviously too much for a starting business, so let’s go a bit lower. How low? Well, how about down to zero? The reality is that all (not most, but all) of these types of programs in software areas that used to be dominated by monopolists, are freely available today. Think open source.

So, What Is Open Source?

Open source stands for open standards in the development of code that runs for software. For developers that means they can freely edit the code in a way they feel, or the bigger group feels, is pragmatic. For the common user, it means that software is free. And not only that, it also means the software was developed by a large group of people instead of a single corporation, and is being improved constantly. Linus’ law, considered the law of open source, states that given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow. The more developers, and the more room for them to improve constantly, the less bugs we encounter.

And open source is gaining popularity. Talking of software that a business needs, we could take Joomla for example. It is an open source content management software for websites that has been downloaded a stunning 15 million times. Together with Drupal, another open-source CMS, they run a large percentage of the websites in the world, including visually very stunning, but also many important websites. Corporations and organisations for whom software is critical to be top level, are turning to open source.

The same is with other types of software. The collaboration and productivity tool eGroupware has received over 2 million downloads from sourceforge.net. What is more exemplary of support for the software is the 94% approval ranking. Document Management software Alfresco has reseived over 1.7 million downloads. It’s approval rating is lower mostly because it is hard to implement out-of-the-box. In reality there is no box. But there are plenty of fixes that make it run smoothly, as we have done in our product. After tweaking, it is one of the best document management softwares out there. A browse through Alfresco’s customer line-up reveals names like VirginMobile, FedEx and KLM, which are big players.

Smart Lazy

There are plenty of arguments that attest to the smartness of using open source, and they will be covered in future posts, but for a small business it takes some time to roll out all of that excellent open source software and make it work to benefit the company. What a small business needs is something useful, but it needs to be useful now! A smart way to be lazy, so to speak. And those are some of the reasons we thought about deploying this package of integrated open source business software. After some hard work, we might have succeeded. I hope you gained some extra insights after reading this article, and I will finish off with a short video:

Is Open Source a Synonym for Free Software ?

Is Open Source a Synonym for Free Software ?

The market for open source and free software is surging high with its appreciation in mainstream segment also. The free software products like Linux or others are moving from the walled boundaries of servers to desktops and laptops. Recently, launched Ultra low cost laptops were supported on Linux and that came as a major breakthrough for it to garner some spotlight from tech analysts.

But still the concept of free software and open source software is not clear with many of us. We are confused at the basic level and interchanging the terms for each other. We use the terms Free Source and Open Source interchangeably and get them confused with the concept that they are available for free.

To some extent the concept gels with what we consider “available for free” but not in complete sense. The word “free” is basically the misnomer. We confuse it with “free burgers” but it should be considered for “free speech”. No doubt that some softwares from both the communities are available for free of cost and are offered as free downloads but not all utilities.

The two communities working with the aim of offering freedom to developers are working in the same direction but are literally and fundamentally different in their approaches. Till 1998, they were more or less same but after that the two movements separated with a different prospective, a different philosophy, and different motives.

The commonality in both the approaches is the open availability of source code to developers but the aim backing this approach is different with both the communities.

Where Free Software Community lays stress on providing source code to developers with the aim that user is free to do what he wish with the software’s source code. It is more philosophical in nature.

However, Open Source believes in offering source code to users with the aim that collaborative efforts can bring more subtle results. It has motivation that users can freely provide their suggestions for the source code and can append it to the existing one if results provided are efficient enough.

Both the communities lay stress on redistribution of code with no restrictions but the principles and motivations are different.

Where one seeks the liberty provided to users; the other targets the development of more efficient software programs with collaborative approach. Against the philosophical methodology of Free Software Community, the Open Source Community is driven by more practical reasons.

To some years the movements were working as a common alliance and Open Source was used as a marketing term for free software to reduce the ambiguity; but to worst it added more problems. So finally the two movements parted and started their own way.

Where the software developed by open source are more or less fits to zero-cost category, nothing like that can be defined for free software. To define it better, nothing which is free of cost can be a tailored fit for both the communities but cannot be turned off even.

Open Source is opposite to original context of Free Software. Free Software aims the freedom of users but Open Source aims the collaborative approach. The former stresses that users can freely see, modify and redistribute the code but latter has the approach that users can see the code but cannot modify it to suit its needs. In OSS, the liberty availed is in accordance of specific licensing agreements allowing one to fiddle with the code.

Free Software values freedom offered to users but Open Source believes in team development of software. Where one can be attached to social movement, the other is a development methodology. Both are against the patents and proprietary software, but cannot go hand in hand due to disagreement on certain principles.

To ask you, is GNU/ Linux is a free software or open source software? Cannot answer surely; Linux is not an open source software but a product of free software community (as you are free to make modifications).

At crux, it can be said that both are different movements with differing principles but are fighting against the common objective “Proprietary Software”.
